This course is intended to convey to teacher-trainees  the knowledge and skills which are required for conducting activities relating to the selection, use and maintenance of implements and machinery in agriculture as well as to equip them with fundamental knowledge for developing and erecting structures on farms.


Literacy demands on our society have increased greatly as we progress from the Industrial Age to the Information Age. Additionally, the cost of reading failure to our society and to individuals is very high. As such, now as never before, teachers need to understand how children can be taught to read and write successfully. This course will introduce student-teachers to curricular/methodological issues in reading, language arts, oral language development, children's literature and writing development. Emphasis will be placed on strategy instruction and practical demonstrations.

General Objectives

For students to:

  • - understand what areas of literacy can be assessed
  • - familiarise themselves with strategies and tools for assessing literacy
  • - recognise the importance of children's literature
  • - become aware of the diversity in literacy education
  • - become knowledgeable of adaptations that can be made for diverse learners

This course seeks to equip student-teachers with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to function effectively in the Social Studies classroom at the Early Childhood and Primary Levels.

Science and its applications have impacted every age of civilization. This cannot change since Science allows the study of the forces that interact and sustain or abuse the universe and its life forms. This course is designed to edify students about Natural Science Chemistry which is the science of composition, properties, and reactions of substances. Students doing Chemistry will come to appreciate the way research has contributed to the knowledge and use of materials. Students undertaking the study of science should seek to understand the dynamism. They also need to accept the responsibility of care for the environment.

This course will focus on methodology  for teaching DRAMA (The Play). The content will be integrated with the concepts of Drama which were studied in ENG 152: Introduction to Drama.Student teachers will be guided to develop materials and appropriate methodologies for teaching Drama (The Play) at Lower, Middle, and Upper Secondary Levels. An area of special focus will be to teach the play at CSEC focusing on general aspects of the structure and elements of the play and the analysis of texts applying CSEC Literary Themes (where relevant).

This course is intended to expose teacher-trainees to the theoretical and practical management principles and practices that govern the production of non-traditional livestock, such as honey bees, fish and rabbits.

This  course is designed to assist Student Teachers in the Bachelors of Education Program to understand some basic principles of Science with emphasis on the discovery approach.  It is hoped that with this approach, student teachers will appreciate the scientific principles to the extent that they will be motivated to teach science in the primary schools through the discovery method. 


This course is part of the requirements for the preparation of competent teachers of Spanish at the early Childhood and Primary levels.

It provides for:

their acquisition of the relevant theoretical and pedagogical knowledge and

  • their development of the skills and attitudes necessary for the successful preparation for and delivery of a programme oriented towards oral communication

This course equips participants with the knowledge,skills and attitudes required for their efficient and effective use the target language to express basic everyday realities.

During the process they will also update their knowledge of some of the cultural practices, products and perspectives of the native speakers of the language.

This course seeks to deepen students' understanding of curriculum and various approaches to curriculum planning as a sociological phenomenon and to apply principles and techniques in evaluating curricula. Among the topics to be covered are : Conceptions of curriculum, influence of behaviorism and humanism on curriculum planning, theories of instruction, curriculum


Educational Technology (ET) is designed to assist student teachers with the integration of Educational Technology (ET) into their classrooms. The primary focus will be to assist students in "making the link" between the scope and sequences of Educational Technology and applying its practical uses to the classroom with the intention of increasing student interest and achievement. Attention will also be given to the use of Educational Technology to enhance curriculum and professional development for students. 

The goal is to develop the confidence and comfort necessary to make technology an embraceable tool for teachers to use within the education system in Guyana.


It is important to recognise that effective teaching and learning depend on part on the strategies employed in instruction, i.e. planning, choosing learning materials, implementing instructional activities, and evaluating student performance. in order to plan, there is need to understand the underlying principles and process of curriculum implementation. this course aims at providing teachers with the skills to analyze and implement the curriculum, particularly in English, Literacy/reading ans social studies. a major objective is o develop competence in utilizing a variety of teaching strategies that are applicable to specific curricular areas. The participants will become acquainted also with rationale and processes of curriculum integration, unit planning and appropriate classroom assessment procedures.

This course aims to provide teacher-trainees (Spanish) with the appropriate theoretical base that would enable them to make informed decisions / selections with regard to teaching-learning approaches and language-teaching methodologies, in their daily practice.

This course is designed to prepare IT teachers to teach profile 3: Problem-solving and Programming section of the CXC CSEC Information Technology syllabus.

This course will build on linguistic skills acquired by students in Spanish Language I A, with the aim of raising their proficiency levels in the four skill areas of listening, reading, speaking and writing in the target language.
